Joshua Salway

Financial Advisor

Modeling ‘wealth without regret’ to me means using the resources God has given you to make a positive impact on those around you. We get one shot at this life and we are called to be good stewards of our financial resources and blessings.

Joshua spent the first thirteen years of his career as a public school teacher in the subject of engineering. His eyes were opened to the importance of personal finance when he enrolled in a Dave Ramsey course at church. As he and his wife worked through their own “Baby Steps,” as Ramsey calls them, Joshua began counseling other couples on their own financial journeys, and loved the process so much that he decided to make a career transition to full-time financial advisor. Joshua particularly loves helping his clients overcome obstacles and challenges that life inevitably brings. He will happily put in long hours and hard days when needed to experience the joy that comes at the end of helping a client work through something they could not have done on their own.

Joshua and his wife, Keri, have four children. Joshua is a sports fanatic and when he is not in the office can most likely be found on the sidelines coaching one of his children’s football or basketball teams.

Tell us about something special from your youth.

My parents were very young when I was born, so my grandparents had a very big influence on my life. I essentially had three sets of parents to raise me and impart their wisdom along the way. I am so grateful to have had that privilege.

Where have you worked? What is the best thing that has ever happened while you were working?

I spent 13 years in public education as a classroom teacher. Each day had its unique challenges and working with students to reach their goals was highly rewarding. I learned to value each person individually and to meet them where they were in their journey to ultimately help them accomplish their goals.

When did you first realize you were interested in finance?

My wife and I took a Dave Ramsey Financial Peace course at our church about 10 years ago which really opened my eyes to the importance of personal finance. Since then I have been on fire about the topic and spent countless hours reading and study personal finance over the years.

What is the most important thing you’ve learned about helping other people?

One of my favorite quotes is from John Wooden. He said, "You can't live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you."

In my eyes, helping others is very rewarding because that is what we have been called to do in this life. The reward in seeing people achieve what they have been working so hard for and knowing that we had even a small part in making it happen is an unmeasurable feeling.

What are you known for among your friends?

I am typically the one making everyone laugh and lifting everyone's spirits. I am a firm believer in making the best of your situation and getting the most out of it. Optimism is contagious.

How do you spend your time outside of work?

I am a huge sports fanatic. From coaching high school basketball to coaching my children’s youth basketball and football, you can pretty much always find me on the court or field. We also watch a lot of sports at home together as a family.

What is your favorite part of what you do at Vestia?

Helping others reach their financial goals is exciting, but helping clients model Wealth Without Regret is an even better part of the job. Working as part of a fantastic team in order to achieve this is icing on the cake.

What book do you always tell people they should read? Why?

How to Win Friends and Influence People is one of my favorite books because it teaches you how to build genuine relationships with people. It is a great leadership book that explains the importance helping others and taking an interest in the hearts and lives of others.

One of Vestia’s values is to model “wealth without regret.” What does this mean to you?

Modeling ‘wealth without regret’ to me means using the resources God has given you to make a positive impact on those around you. My late grandfather used to quote the cliché phrase, "I have never seen a hearse pulling a trailer full of money behind it." Money isn't something you can take with you after this life, so hoarding it is against our calling. We get one shot at this life and we are called to be good stewards of our financial resources and blessings.
